Western Vs. Vedic Astrology: Understanding The Difference

Updated: Sep 28, 2023

Vedic Astrology or Sidereal and Western Astrology or Tropical- are two frequently discussed systems. What makes one gravitate to one system more than the other is based on preference and level of understanding.

astrology

Astrology is the study of how the heavenly bodies affect us. The type of astrology you choose may be your destiny for where you are now. The main idea is that you are ready to discover more.

All planets revolve around the Sun and rotate on their axis. In any system of astrology, the luminaries Sun and Moon have a consistent meaning. The Sun is the light of the chart and represents your soul. At the same time, the Moon represents your mind and storehouse of memories in this lifetime.

Along with the main seven planets [2 luminaries and five planets], the nodes Rahu Ketu are used in Vedic. At the same time, the outer planets are Uranus, Pluto, and Neptune. They are more used in tropical. Some Vedic astrologers incorporate the outer planets too.

Western Astrology Vs. Vedic Astrology

The main difference between Western Astrology and Vedic Astrology is the different zodiac systems. Thousands of years ago [around 285 AD], the stars aligned in both systems. Since then, the zodiac has moved backward through the procession; the longitudinal difference is now about 24 degrees, which is almost an entire sign [30 degrees]. For example, the Leo season in Western astrology still falls in the zodiac of Cancer according to the sky in Vedic astrology.

Western Astrology is a seasonal system based on the tropical zodiac. And more importance is placed on your sun sign. This system uses 12 zodiac signs, 12 houses, and has a fixed starting point.

Vedic Astrology is based on the sidereal system, the 27 nakshatras [lunar mansions] behind the 12 zodiac signs. Additionally, Vedic astrology uses divisional charts, yogas, Dasha systems, nodes, and more to garner the strength and direction of a person's life path.

Which one is better?

This seems like a never-ending debate. I will admit that initially, I saw things one way and decided one way was better. Now, I can see that while one is more accurate, both can be used for different uses and can be a tool for understanding and bridging Heaven and Earth.

So, in this day and age, it truly comes down to preference. A birth chart is generally studied to discover the lessons the Soul is here to learn while on its journey to become one again with Spirit. So, the "one" that is better is the one you can understand and apply to the areas necessary for growth.

I have a personal affinity for Jyotish, but many systems overlap and can be used simultaneously.

Either way, ALL roads lead back to God in one way or another, so I respect all forms. Therefore, the system that resonates with you is the best fit for you.

What do you think?
